Kenilworth Gardens Tour

Minutes of Evergreen Garden Club

September 16, 2025

Attending: Winkie Crigler, Rosa Wallach, Susan Bluhm, Fran Usher, Christie Thorley, Sarah Vilms, Ann Reid, Ellen Thrasher

Members gathered at the Kenilworth Aquatic Gardens, Washington, DC for an education lecture and walking tour conducted by National Park Ranger Solomon.

President Ellen Thrasher called the meeting to order. New members had the opportunity to share their background, what brought them to the Club and their gardening interests. Winkie Crigler gave a summary Treasurer’s report which will be provided to members for review and approval at the October 21, 2025 meeting.

The program focused on the interesting history of what is now the Kenilworth Aquatic Gardens.  From colonial settlement to family farm in the Civil War era, to commercial development of lily ponds in the late 19th Century to its present day public park.   The one hour walk through acres of lotus and lily ponds, tidal marshes and the sighting of numerous wild birds made for an enjoyable and informative morning.

Presdient Ellen Thrasher called for a motion to approve the minutes of the May 20, 2025 meeting. The motion was made by Winkie Crigler and Ann Reid seconded the motion. The minutes were unanimously approved.

The attendees voted unanimously to adjourn.

Respectfully submitted,

Ellen Thrasher on behalf of Recording Secretary Jane Nassim
