Tour of the Bishop’s Garden, Washington National Cathedral and Optional Picnic Lunch
Location: 3101 Wisconsin Avenue, NW Washington, DC 20016. Parking in the underground parking garage is recommended for visitors, due to limited parking on the grounds and in the neighborhood.
Description: Terraced into the south side of Mt. St. Alban, the walled Bishop’s Garden is the most intensely cultivated of the 57 acre Cathedral Close, land that once was the home and garden of George Washington’s registrar of the United States Treasury. An All Hallow’s Guild Member will lead Evergreen members on a one-hour tour of the garden, followed by an optional picnic lunch on the grounds.

Native Plants

Description: Launching our theme of Native Plants is Joanne Hutton, who will speak on Supporting our Songbirds with Native Plants, and discuss the Plant NOVA Natives campaign and the Audubon Society of Northern Virginia’s Wildlife Sanctuary programs.

Volunteer Workday at Tregaron Conservancy – Fall Clean-up
Location: Klingle Road Entrance, 3031 Klingle Road, NW, Washington, DC
Description: Volunteers will gather for a socially distanced clean-up morning at the EGC garden within the beautiful and historic landscape of the 13-acre Tregaron Conservancy. A member of the Tregaron team will join the volunteers to share information about new plants and guide our efforts.

Fall Dried Flower Arranging Workshop
Location: Zoom
Description: Jeanne Ha of the Washington Flower School will lead Members in a Zoom Workshop to create a Dried Fall Flower Arrangement to grace their homes during Thanksgiving and beyond. Based on a list of materials provided by Ms. Ha and working with Hidden Ridge Farm, bouquets will be assembled for interested members at a cost consistent with the materials cost for Amy Wilbur’s 11/20 workshop.

Refreshing Your Landscape

Description: Zoom Panel Discussion from Evergreen Garden Club members on their own experiences refreshing their landscapes, each with a particular challenge, such as a new look for a front or back garden, a new house without landscaping, the loss or removal of trees in the garden, as well as other needs and desires for a fresh look. Members on the panel will include Susan Vanderver, Colet Mitchell, Kathryn Donaldson Baker, and Cathy Farrell.

The Art of Cooking with Lavender
Location: TBD
Description: Cookbook author Nancy Baggett will teach Evergreen members how to incorporate lavender into a variety of dishes, such as meats, creamy cheeses, certain vegetables and sweets. Recipe examples are Lemon-Lavender Muffins, Pork Chops and Apples with Lavender and Thyme, and Lavender-Ginger-Lime Cooler. A brief business meeting will follow.

Tour of Brookside Gardens
Location: 1800 Glenallan Avenue, Wheaton, MD 20902
Description: Evergreen Members will have a guided tour of Brookside Gardens in Montgomery County followed by a brief business meeting and optional Picnic Grove lunch. The award-winning 50-acre public display garden includes several distinct areas: Aquatic Garden, Azalea Garden, Butterfly Garden, Children’s Garden, Rose Garden, Japanese Style Garden, Trial Garden, Rain Garden, and the Woodland Walk. The Formal Gardens areas include a Perennial Garden, Yew Garden, the Maple Terrace, and Fragrance Garden. Brookside Gardens also feature two conservatories.

Tour of Gunston Hall and its Restored Riverside Garden and Luncheon at Ann Mason Room
Location: 10709 Gunston Rd, Lorton, VA 22079
Description: Evergreen Members will have a chance to travel to Gunston Hall, built between 1775-1779 by Founding Father George Mason IV and his wife Ann Eilbeck, to tour the Riverside Garden, a one-acre site overlooking the Potomac River restored to its 18th-century appearance. Features we will see in the garden include a window revealing part of the original 18th-century pathway in the center of the garden, new pathways throughout that follow the original layout of the garden, heirloom decorative and vegetable plants that were familiar to George Mason, and a large, 18th-century-style fence that links the mansion to the garden, just as it did during Mason’s life. Tours of the mansion will also be available, and members can stroll the property and see the family graveyard. There will be an end-of-year, short business meeting, followed by a seated, catered luncheon.
