2020-2021 Evergreen Garden Club Programs

Welcome Coffee and Business Meeting

Location:  Members’ Homes Via Zoom

Description: The EGC Program year will open with a welcome coffee, followed by a short business meeting.  Co-Presidents Susan Vanderver and Cathy Farrell will moderate.  Each member will be given 3 minutes to introduce herself and discuss her best garden experience – whether at home or elsewhere – during pandemic.  That discussion will be followed by a short video garden tour and the business meeting.

Tour of Green Spring Gardens

Location:  4603 Green Spring Rd, Alexandria, VA    

Description:  Members will meet at Green Spring Gardens, where they will break into groups for a socially distanced docent-led tour of the upper gardens and the restored 18th Century manor house, if it is open at that time. Green Spring Gardens, a national historic site, has a wooded stream valley with ponds, a naturalistic native plant garden, more than 20 thematic demonstration gardens, a greenhouse, a plant shop, and a horticultural reference library. The gardens focus on practical landscaping techniques appropriate for the Washington metropolitan area.  Members who wish to spend more time exploring may bring a picnic lunch to enjoy after the tour.

Volunteer Workday at Tregaron Conservancy – Fall Clean-up

Location:  Klingle Road Entrance, 3031 Klingle Road, NW, Washington, DC

Description:   Volunteers will gather for a socially distanced clean-up morning at the EGC garden within the beautiful and historic landscape of the 13-acre Tregaron Conservancy.  June Broadstone, who co-leads the gardening volunteer group and maintains the garden throughout the growing season, will join the volunteers to share information about new plants and guide our efforts.

Fall Floral Arranging Workshop with Ami Wilbur

Location:  Members’ Homes via Zoom  

Description: At our November 17th Virtual Evergreen Garden Club meeting, Ami Wilbur, head of floral and event decor at Hillwood Estate and Gardens, will conduct a Fall Floral Arrangement Tutorial to lead us at home in making a lovely fall arrangement. Ami will provide a materials list a week in advance of what we will need to each create our own arrangement, based on her directions and guidance. Ami has assured us that the necessary flowers and greens will be available at your local Whole Foods or Trader Joe’s grocery store.    OR

11th Street Bridge Park Project

Location:  Members’ Homes via Zoom

Description: Scott Kratz, Director of the 11th Street Bridge Park Project, will highlight news on the project , which is slated to open in 2023, along with information about the BBAR (Building Bridges Across the River) Farms.   Washington D.C.'s first elevated park will span the Anacostia River and serve as a new venue for healthy recreation, environmental education, and the arts.

Investing in the Planet: How your Garden Can Help Save the Bees.

Location: Members’ homes via Zoom

Description:   Sam Droege is the head of the USGS Native Bee Inventory and Monitoring Program in Maryland, an organization that monitors the health and habitat of bees in the United States.

Special note:    Member Sharon Stoliaroff’s home is the former beekeeping station for the USDA and was featured on the cover of American Beekeeper in 1919.

Tour of Gunston Hall and its Restored Garden

Location:

Description:  On April 20, 2021, Evergreen Members will have a chance to travel to Gunston Hall, built between 1775-1779 by Founding Father George Mason IV and his wife Ann Eilbeck, to tour the Riverside Garden, a one-acre site overlooking the Potomac River restored to its 18th-century appearance. Features we will see in the garden include a window revealing part of the original 18th-century pathway in the center of the garden, new pathways throughout that follow the original layout of the garden, heirloom decorative and vegetable plants that were familiar to George Mason, and a large, 18th-century-style fence that links the mansion to the garden, just as it did during Mason’s life.     OR

    Description: George Mason was not only the author of the Virginia Declaration of Rights that inspired the United States Bill of Rights, but a farmer and serious gardener. Join your Evergreen Garden Club friends at Gunston Hall in Lorton, Virginia on April 20, 2021 for a tour of the Restored Riverside Garden and picnic lunch.Tuesday. Tour of The Bishop’s Garden at Washington National Cathedral, followed by Evergreen Garden Club Picnic Lunch - CANCELLED: GARDEN CLOSED TO TOURS

Location: 3101 Wisconsin Ave, NW, Washington, DC

Description:  Join fellow members for a tour to learn about the restoration of the Bishop’s Garden. 

Terraced into the south side of Mt. St. Alban, the walled Garden is visited by thousands every year. It is the most intensely cultivated of the 59-acre Cathedral Close, land that once was the home and garden of George Washington's registrar of the United States Treasury. After the tour, enjoy a fun and, if necessary, socially distanced picnic lunch with your friends in the Bishop’s Garden or the All Hallows Amphitheater, giving us all a great chance to visit before summer begins.  Members may order box lunches from Open City Café in advance or bring their own. Tuesday, May 18, 2021 10:30 am    SUBSTITUTE TOUR Guided Tour of Hidden Ridge Farm, located in Maryland’s Agricultural Reserve in the rolling foothills of Sugarloaf Mountain.Location: 23801 Peach Tree Road, Clarksburg, MD 20871

Description: Melane Kinney Hoffman started the flower and herb farm after twenty years of raising horses on the fifty acres with her husband. A lifelong gardener, Melane earned the Master Gardener certification from the University of Maryland Agricultural Extension, and has experimented with a wide range of perennials, annuals, shrubs, herbs and trees.  She and her team are focused on bringing free cut, sustainably and naturally grown, flowers to the local market. Following the tour, we will gather for a picnic lunch.

October 15, 2019 

Description:  Back in the Garden: The objective of this lecture is to educate attendees about common musculoskeletal injuries that occur from gardening and prevention of those injuries.  The lecture will cover spinal anatomy, healthy static and dynamic postures, ergonomic gardening tools, and assistive devices in the garden. 

 

Josh Dickstein is one of two physical therapists at Sumner Fitness, a full-service membership gym with a physical therapy practice, located in the Shops at Sumner Place in Bethesda.  Josh has 18 years of experience treating patients with a variety of musculoskeletal and neuromuscular disorders with an emphasis on pain management and post-surgical rehabilitation.  Josh is a graduate of the University of Hartford.  Originally from New York, Josh came to the Washington, DC area in 2001 to work at Sibley Memorial Hospital prior to joining Sumner Fitness in December 2003.

Description:  Gardening in Urban Spaces: Meredith Sheperd, Founder of Love and Carrots will discuss how to get the most production out of your space given its challenges. She will talk about basic vegetable garden set up and placement, gardening with low light levels, gardening in tiny spaces, and common pests and diseases in these conditions.

Description: The Art of Cooking with Lavender: Cookbook author Nancy Baggett will introduce us to various kinds of lavender with a hands-on smelling and tasting of several good culinary lavenders, then enchant us with slides of lavender gardens and fields while covering basics of growing, harvesting, and readying culinary lavender buds for cooking. She will also introduce cooking techniques, and give out tasting samples, starter packets, and recipe cards.  Her cookbook will be for sale at a small discount at our meeting.
