My work is loving the world.  Here the sunflowers, there the hummingbird - equal seekers of sweetness.  Mary Oliver

History

History

In the spring of 1953, Mrs. Henry Allen, Mrs. Robert Boorman, Mrs. Cabell Maddux, Mrs. Bernard Malloy and Mrs. Stuart Martin drew up a constitution and elected member to join them in the creation of the Evergreen Garden Club, a charitable and educational organization.  The club is designed to support civic and philanthropic activities in the Washington Area and draws members from suburban Maryland, Northern Virginia, and the District of Columbia.  Members must demonstrate an interest in learning more about horticulture and the practice of sustainable gardening.

The Evergreen Garden Club is a member of the National Capital Area Garden Club. NCAGC provides education about environmental issues and garden and floral design to its seventy member clubs.  In 2018, NCAGC awarded Evergreen a Philanthropy Award.https://ncagardenclubs.org The NCAGC is a regional organization of the National Garden Clubs, INC. Membership in the National and Regional organizations provide our members with the ability to participate in local, regional and national programs.

Monthly programs provide members with knowledge useful in their own gardens. Each year the membership selects worthy projects to support in the local community.  Over the last few years the group has made repeated grants to Washington Youth Gardens, Rock Creek Conservancy, Student Conservation Association, Washington Jesuit Academy, and Joseph’s House, among others.  Most recently, Evergreen Garden Club has supported Tregaron Conservancy with grants and volunteer members of EGC have worked to restore Tregaron’s garden.  In 2021,  EGC included the 11th Street Bridge Project among its grants.
